It was just last week when a major ransomware attack had been carried out on the government of Costa Rica. The attack was directed at the government infrastructure, which ended up crippling the entire system in Costa Rica. As a result, huge chaos was caused throughout the government of Costa Rica.
According to Ido Fishman, a veteran information security researcher and investigator, the gang which carried out the ransomware attack has revealed its identity.
Ido Fishman has confirmed it through several sources and even the government of Costa Rica has confirmed the identity of the gang behind the ransomware. It was confirmed by the sources that the gang behind the ransomware attack was the Conti ransomware gang.
Later, the Conti ransomware gang did confirm their involvement in the ransomware attack and took full responsibility for the attack. Despite the claim and the pressure built by the Conti gang, the government of Costa Rica has decided to stand its ground against the cybercriminal gang.
The government of Costa Rica has made it clear that it won’t be paying a single penny to the Conti ransomware gang in the form of a ransom. The decision not to cooperate with the cybercriminals in any way has been made by Carlos Alvarado, the current president of Costa Rica.
The sources have confirmed that the attack on Costa Rican Government infrastructure took place earlier this week. Due to the cyberattack, multiple services being provided by the government ended up getting shut down. The government sectors that were impacted the most were the Labor Ministry and the Finance Ministry.
As the attack took place, the entire Finance Ministry ended up going down for many hours. The particular system that took the worst hit was the payment platform that is used by the Costa Rican Government for salary payments of public employees. The same system is responsible for handling the pension payments for senior citizens and retired government employees.
The gang has demanded ransomware so it won’t publicly release the confidential data it has stolen from the government’s infrastructure.
